The Bacup Natural History Society & Museum was established in 1878, we have a collection of over 4,000 photographs and slides along with various historical documents on the Bacup and Stacksteads areas. Our museum, displays various domestic and military artefacts and we also hold one of the oldest flint & fossil collections in Lancashire. Fondly known locally as the “ Nat” we are situated at 24 Yorkshire Street, Bacup, once the home of the Hare and Hounds, pub. From Easter to the end of September we open every Tuesday afternoon 1.30 pm to 4 pm, Thursday night from 7.30 pm, and every third Saturday in the month other times by  arrangement. Visitors are welcome to come and use our new research and reference area where they can get help with thier family or local history research, access online records or view our original collection of old local  newspapers such as the Bacup Times, The Bacup & Stacksteads Chronicle and  several issues of the Bacup Echo

To Patrons, Friends and Members : The ‘NAT’ and the Covid-19 Pandemic   As you will be aware, your committee took the decision over six months ago that our premises should be closed in line with Government advice and regulations.  Although we had hoped to be able to re-open, even perhaps on a limited basis, the recent corona-virus resurgence and consequential additional regulations which would need to be implemented have deferred any such action well into next year.      Unfortunately, the responsibility for preserving the collections, displays and fabric of the building continues, whether we are open or not, in that a minimum level of heating, de-humidification and security/insurance cover needs to be maintained, especially as we enter the winter months.   Our closure in March co-incided with the period when the various forms of subscriptions were due to be paid but with uncertainty of the opening date, no requests for such payments were made.     Arguably, the situation has not improved for most of our members but if you feel able to continue to support us in this way, your renewal for the current 2020/21 year would be greatly appreciated and our grateful thanks to those of you who have already made your contribution. For your information, the current membership fees are in the table below, these are included in Patrons (£120.00 per annum) and Friends (£60 per annum) contributions.   In anticipation of a rapid return to normal, thank you for your continuous support.           Ordinary (aged 18 and over but less than 60) : £ 15.00 Young people aged under 18: £ 5.00 Senior citizens, (aged 60 and over) : £ 10.00 Single Life Membership £125.00 Family Membership Two Adults Two Children 13 & Under £35.00 Associate Membership resident over 20 miles from Bacup : Adult :£10.00 Senior Associate : £ 6.00 Junior Associate : £ 2.00 Ways to pay:-   Post cash or cheque (made payable to Bacup Natural History Society) through the NAT letter box – please put your name in the envelope and address to C Ormrod.  One of our committee members will be going into the NAT to check things over regularly and pick up any mail.   For those of you living out of the area, please post to The NAT accordingly, probably best to avoid cash in the mail though. You can pay by bank transfer or Paypal please  email  to request the details to do this.       The committee as always would like to thank you for your support and wish you all well, keep safe, keep well.   Yours sincerely    Christine Ormrod (Treasurer) on behalf of The Committee of Bacup NAT
