On Friday 1st July 2016 and Saturday 2nd July, we screened the offical 1916 film  Battle of the Somme.  The film was a 1916 British documentary and propaganda film, shot by two official cinematographers. That depicts the British Army in the preliminary and early days of the battle of the Somme 1 July - 18 November 1916. We also have on show a detailed exhibition of men from Bacup and Stacksteads who were killed on the first day of the battle and those killed over the following 141 days. Along with a display of a soldiers uniform and lace souveneirs brought back from France by a soldier depeicting Albert Cathedral which was destroyed during the war. One other feature was a  model of the Holt Caterpillar which was on show along with a video showing the caterpillar working on the Somme in 1916. The model was made in 1963 by Mr George Rodgett a Stacksteads engineer who worked as a driver fitter on the caterpillar during the battle. During breaks he drew sketches on any bits of paper he could find, surviving the war he  began building the model in 1963 completing it in 1965. A beautiful wreath was supplied by the Rotary Club as well as lapel badges, pins and crosses on sale for the British Legion for which we raised over £60.00. Thankyou to Councillor Peter Steen for organising these.
