Billy Knowles War - July 15th 2017
On Saturday 15th July 2017 the NAT held a very interesting open day. We were visited by Scott Knowles who told us his own personal true story of his grandfather who was wounded in WW1. Apparently Billy Knowles was a working class weaver before he was called upon to fight in the war. Scott told us of his grandfather’s experience in the trenches; he was wounded quite seriously in battle and Scott described his horrific injuries, his treatment and his subsequent recovery and return to civilian life. In the photograph, Scott shows some of the medical instruments used to treat his grandfather’s wounds.
Football the Early Years - 18th May 2018
Our Open Day on Saturday 18th May took the form of a special event and display relating to 'Football in Bacup: The Early Years' and attracted a steady stream of members and visitors throughout the day. Committee member Andy oversaw this event covering the period from 1870 to WW1 and because of his close association with the National Football Museum in Manchester it meant that Bacup had 14 items from their collection on display including a Burnley FA cup winner’s medal from 1914.
Fossil Fest 3rd February 2019On Sunday 3rd February, from 10.30 am to 3.00 pm we had a steady stream of visitors joining us in our fabulous Fossil Fest, another heritage lottery funded event as part of our Sharing Heritage grant. Individuals and families were invited to come and discover the mysterious world of fossils, explore the NAT's collection of local finds and receive expert evaluation on their own collections. Children were invited to dig their own fossil to keep and take home and to use our 8 microscopes to view a selection of fossils, crystals and other specimens. Naming our rather friendy dinosaur gave the chance to win a fabulous fossil hunting kit as well as enjoying being able to have faces painted.
